Solar Railways Could Be the Solution to Emission from Train Travels

In a remarkable move towards sustainability, the Central Railway network in India is embarking on a venture to install over 1,000 hectares of solar energy infrastructure

As a pioneering entity with a rich history, the Central Railway zone is set to deploy 1 megawatt (MW) of solar units across 81 locations within its extensive network. This initiative underscores a growing trend among railways to harness their vast land holdings for eco-friendly pursuits while contributing to the achievement of national renewable energy targets.

Utilizing approximately 2,700 acres (1,093 hectares) of unutilized railway land, the Central Railway aims to maximize the potential of these sites for solar energy infrastructure, playing a significant role in reducing the railway’s carbon emissions. 

This endeavor builds upon the legacy of the Central Railway, which operated India’s first passenger railway line 170 years ago. The railway has also secured a tender for a 1MW solar plant at a newly established electric locomotive shed in Nagpur, exemplifying its commitment to sustainable progress.

The approach taken involves Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), contractual arrangements between electricity producers and consumers. This strategy aligns with a broader trend observed across Europe, where railway companies are increasingly adopting PPAs to access renewable energy sources.

Central Railway’s initiative aligns with India’s ambitious solar railway plans, forming a vital component of a larger “mega plan” by Indian Railways to establish solar plants on vacant land.

With a target of achieving 20 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity by 2030, India’s railway network is actively contributing to the country’s self-reliance aspirations (‘Atma-Nirbhar’) and the goal of 100% electrification by December 2023.

Parallel to these efforts, the Central Railway is fostering solar energy integration by installing rooftop panels at multiple stations. 

A future 1MW solar plant in Pune, to be developed through a PPA, further signifies the railway’s dedication to expanding its renewable energy footprint and nurturing a more sustainable future.

Throughout Europe, railways are embracing renewable energy through PPAs and innovative projects. From Thalys’ utilization of 100% green energy to Belgium’s SNCB installing 20,000 solar panels on its structures, the railway industry is leveraging its land and rooftops to contribute to a greener planet. 

The integration of solar panels along tracks and sleepers in ventures like those undertaken by Swiss start-ups Sun-Ways and Deutsche-Bahn highlights the industry’s commitment to innovative sustainability practices.

As rail travel gains popularity due to its eco-friendly profile, the adoption of renewable energy in railways underscores their commitment to planet-friendly transportation options. 

Through these endeavors, railways are not only transforming their operations but also contributing to the global shift towards a more sustainable energy landscape.
